I remember the first lunares I scratched
but I didn’t understand why until many years later,
when I looked at the scars
and wished I could scratch them back in.

They were the same lunares I saw in pictures of my ancestors’ faces.
Did my ancestors feel the hateful ripping of my skin?
Were they angry?
Did they all stare down and believe I was a pocha ingrata?

the deep sound of vomit falls
and covers stalls.
Pipelines clog
with colored spit
sits in the toilet
and flushes her body,
while she sinks her mind
into self-help books
in hopes they will heal her.
